Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, forcefully resumed his position on February 27, 2025, following his impeachment on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misappropriation. Obasa arrived at the Assembly Complex accompanied by heavily armed security operatives, declaring, “I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly.”
Obasa’s return has intensified the leadership crisis within the Assembly. Upon his arrival, he proceeded directly to the Speaker’s office, bypassing colleagues engaged in discussions within the Assembly premises.
The situation escalated as reports emerged that security details assigned to the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, were withdrawn, while Obasa’s security was reinstated.
Obasa, who was in the United States at the time of his impeachment, has legally contested his removal, alleging procedural irregularities.
The unfolding events have raised concerns about the stability and governance of the Lagos State House of Assembly, as the power tussle between Obasa and Meranda continues to escalate.
