Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has died at the age of 63 in a helicopter crash. CNN confirmed his death, citing reports from Iranian news outlets.
The crash also claimed the lives of Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and seven others.
Earlier reports from the DAILY POST indicated that Raisi’s helicopter made a hard landing while he was visiting a northern region, leaving his condition initially unknown.
Raisi’s death comes at a tense time in the Middle East, with ongoing conflict in Gaza. In response to the tragedy, Iran’s government convened an urgent meeting on Monday, as reported by the Iranian state news agency, IRNA.
