As the world grapples with numerous challenges such as poverty, violence, and human rights abuses, the power of friendship emerges as a beacon of hope. On July 30, the International Day of Friendship, we are reminded of the importance of human solidarity in overcoming these crises. Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2011, this day emphasizes that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures, and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.

This year’s theme, “Sharing the human spirit through friendship,” resonates deeply as it underscores the need for camaraderie and trust to foster lasting stability and unity. The International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA), a prestigious organization with United Nations ECOSOC Special Consultative Status since 2019, invites the general public to celebrate this significant day.

Highlighting the event, the 2024 SDGs Most Friendly Governor Award will be presented to His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodinma, Executive Governor of Imo State. This accolade recognizes his outstanding efforts in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fostering a community spirit that transcends cultural and social divides.

Other distinguished guests expected at the event include His Excellency Per Stafsen, World Peace President from Denmark, Ambassador Professor Chidi Ehiriodo, International Director, and Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nkweke, World Peace Spokesman, among others.

In a statement, the IAWPA emphasized the role of young people in this mission, as future leaders who must be actively involved in community activities that promote international understanding and respect for diversity. “To confront those crises and challenges, their root causes must be addressed by promoting and defending a shared spirit of human solidarity that takes many forms — the simplest of which is friendship,” the statement read.

The celebration will take place on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at Rockview Hotels in Owerri, Imo State, starting at 10 a.m. It promises to be an inspiring occasion that reinforces the power of friendship and unity in building a better world.
