Football icon Lionel Messi has expressed gratitude for being referenced in music by top global artists, including Nigeria’s Burna Boy, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Justin Bieber, Stormzy, Bad Bunny, and Lil Uzi Vert.
Speaking in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Messi revealed that his sons get excited when they hear his name in songs, describing it as a touching experience.
“My sons also enjoy it, and they are surprised to hear my name in a song. It’s actually really nice to be part of music from that angle,” he said.
Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, noted that music has always been a part of his career, especially in the locker room, pre-match rituals, and post-match celebrations.
“We listen to music in our everyday lives. The football environment is filled with music before and after games. It’s something that has always been there for me throughout my career,” Messi added.
Apple Music even has a dedicated playlist featuring songs that reference Messi, a testament to his cultural influence beyond football.
Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo remain two of the most referenced footballers in music, often used as metaphors for success.
