Following the partial relaxation of the lockdown by Gov. Hope Uzodinma, the ministry of Transport has engaged some stakeholders in the transport sector to ensure compliance to social distancing with regard to government approved passenger limit and compulsory wearing of face facemask.
The Commissioner for Transport, Barr. Rex Anunobi, who addressed the leadership of Bus/Taxi Imo Transport Association and National Union of Road Transport Workers at Imo International Conference Center (IICC) on Monday, said under this period, taxi will carry only four(4) passengers including the driver while mini bus also known as ‘Bus Imo’ will carry six(6) passengers also including the driver.
Barr. Anunobi who described the transport sector as the nexus for economic development, said the Shared Prosperity government of Senator Hope Uzodinma is determined to enforce compliance to social distancing and other preventive health measures to contain spread of the deadly virus.
The Commissioner who explained that the governor partially relaxed the lockdown to allow skeletal economic activities including transport services, urged commercial vehicle operators to reciprocate the gesture by adhering to the directive of the government.
He further explained that the partial relaxation of the lockdown does not affect the dusk to dawn curfew of 6pm to 6am earlier imposed by the government.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Bus/Taxi Imo Transport Association, Comr. Kingsley Nwachukwu, said his team has started sensitizing his members to ensure compliance to the government directive on social distancing with regard to the new passengers limit.
He assured the Commissioner of total compliance by the drivers to help government in its efforts to contain the spread of Corona virus in the state.
