The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has said that only those with decent records in both public and private life should aspire for the office of the President in 2023.

The group frowned at those who have stolen the nation’s treasury to stay away from the 2023 presidential race in order to have people with clean records lead the country to its promised land.

A statement issued in Kaduna and made available to DAILY POST on Thursday by Comrade Isah Abubakar and Comrade Mock Samuel Kure, President and Director General, Media and Publicity of the group said, “We wish to counsel those who have stolen their state’s resources or have looted our national treasury to stay far away from 2023 Presidential bid, as Our Presidency will henceforth be occupied by people of honour not people with questionable characters.”

The youths expressed dismay with massive online and offline presidential campaigns for Senator Orji Uzo Kalu, the former Governor of Abia State, saying that they see his recent move as an attempt to completely rubbish what is left of Nigeria’s integrity before the World.

According to the statement, “The attention of the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria has been drawn to massive online and offline Presidential campaigns for Senator Orji Uzo Kalu, the former Governor of Abia State. While it is within his fundamental human right to aspire for any office, we see his recent move as an attempt to completely rubbish what is left of Nigeria’s integrity before the world.”

The group questioned how someone who has been convicted of a criminal offence and sentenced for fraud has the courage to aspire for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

It observed that it is on record that Sen Orji Kalu hid under judicial technicality to evade serving his full sentence and wondered if he and his promoters can’t see that he has questionable characters to contest the highest office in the country.

It stated that what is still keeping Sen Kalu in the Red Chamber is the inability of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to revisit his case and start prosecuting as recommended by the court that technically ordered his release.

It said that when his trial is done many times, Sen Orji would be found guilty, stressing that all the courts in the land have found him guilty of stealing public funds and the presumption of innocence is no longer on his side.

The group called on the Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, and the Chief Law Officer of the Country, Abubakar Malami, SAN to tidy up the process of arraigning Kalu so that he can go back to where he rightly belongs in order to save Nigeria further embarrassment.
