Renowned highlife musician and master of ceremonies, Ugo Stevenson has called on Imo State-based Hip-hop and R&B artistes to sing in Igbo Language.
He made the call during the album launch/listening party of 2Blac at Ibari Ogwa Village last weekend.
Stevenson said that with the rate Igbo Language is fading away, the language could go into extinction soon and urged musicians to sing in Igbo so that the language won’t die.
“It is said that all things can perish under the sun but music alone shall live and never to die. If music will never die, it is the best medium we can use to immortalize our language.
Most artistes would prefer Yoruba Language to Igbo Language in their lyrics abandoning their origin for another which they know nothing about. This has gone a long way in making people speaking Igbo language in public places feel inferior unlike when they speak other languages in Nigeria. But if the songs we sing everyday are in Igbo language, there is no way we can be ashamed of it”
Stevenson who is also the facilitator of the All Igbo Music Award tagged Ekwe Awards, slated for December 25th, urged governments, corporate bodies and individuals to support the event which might hold in Enugu or Ebonyi State this year.
“The award is to promote Igbo music artistes, marketers, producers and journalists who have been promoting Igbo music in the category of Abigbo, Odumodu, Ekpili, Eriobo, Oyilima, , highlife, Bongo, Nkwanwaite and others” Stevenson added.
