Imo State Police Command yesterday smashed a baby factory in Umuaka, Njaba Local Government Area of the state and rescued 25 pregnant girls.
The Police Ambush Squad led by the state commissioner of Police, Alhaji Muhammed Katsina cordoned the premises of Ahatech Pure Water, Umuaka where an illegal outfit named as Ahamefula Motherless Babies home is located.
According to the CP, Ahatech Pure Water, Umuaka and Ahamefula Motherless Babies’s Home were suspected to be owned by a woman named Madam One Thousand (Madam 1000) who was said to be at large. Four of the pregnant girls had children between the ages of four and six month.
Most of the pregnant girls who are students of secondary schools, told journalists that they were brought to the place on the promise they would be taken care of, only for them to be locked up without being allowed to leave the premises.
However, one of the victims, 25 year-old Nkeiru Obidike of Ugbele, Obodoukwu in Ideato North LGA, said she was promised N50,000 after delivering the baby and handing it over to Madam 1000.
On why she decided to embark on such illicit business, she attributed it to lack of job.
Some of the victims include, Chiamaka Akubuiro (21) who is a student of Holy Rosary secondary school, PortHarcourt, Rivers State; Chinwere Onwuegbu (17) a student of Agwa secondary school, Agwa, Oguta LGA; Prisca Chinedozie (23), a student of Benco Commercial secondary school Ikembara, Ikeduru LGA; and Ogechi Chigbo of St. Catherine’s Girls’ secondary commercial school Afigbo North, Ebony State; Adaobi Akubueze (17) from Omuma in Oru East LGA; Witness Ewereuzo from Amuzari in Isiala Mbano LGA of Imo State; Joy Odunze (16) from Umuguma in Owerri West LGA and Rosemary Osuji of number 30 Umuonyeche Street, Owerri.
The rest are Oluchi Eze from Eziama Ubulu in Oru East LGA; Chika Nduka from Nsukpo Ogbaku in Mbaitoli LGA; Nkeiru Obidike from Obodoukwu Ideato North LGA, Joy Amadi, Akanu Umuapu in Ohaji/Egbema LGA; Onyinyechi Onyeugo from Ulakwoche Ulakwo in Owerri North LGA; Nneka Chibueze from Eziama Obiato in Mbaitoli LGA and Onyinyechi Irondi (18) from Awaka.
