Imo state government Wednesday failed in its bid to bulldoze the state library.
A member of the staff of the library who refused to disclose his identity told newsmen that officials of the state government stormed the premises of the library, Wednesday with heavy trucks with the intent of bulldozing it, but the staff resisted.
The worker who decried the violent approach of the officials said only 72 hours notice was given to them and the notice was not formal but oral.
The civil servant asserted that together with him and other of his colleagues rejected the forceful and unlawful eviction.
He gave his reasons as that where the governor wants to relocate the library is in an obscure area that is not motorable.
He wondered why the governor would decide to relocate the library to an uncomfortable area without taking into cognizance that such academic outfit is always sited in the heart of every city.
He equally said that with the high level of academic awareness in the state, the governor ought not to be treating them with disdain.
The enraged civil servant questioned the rationale behind moving the library.
The civil servants later protected at the complex of the state House of Assembly.
The carried placards with various inscriptions, such as “No relocation, no movement, library ought to be in the heart of the city”. “Relocating Imo State Library is a ploy to kill education and make nonsense of free education”, and library is being relocated to an obscure plot of Owerri in a free education state.
Meanwhile, the Imo State House of Assembly has asked the Governor not to relocate the library.
The lawmakers say that relocating the library from where it is presently will go against the free education programme in the state.
