All Progressives Congress (APC) Imo State is presently facing another crisis of confidence with most serving legislators and aspirants at each other’s jugular for the nomination tickets.
Sources close to Community Watchdog have it that the Executive Governor at a meeting with all the Aspirants for various elective offices which held at the EXCO Chambers of Government House Owerri, recently, announced that mock primaries to select candidates would hold on the 1st of September 2014.
Meanwhile most aspirants are grumbling because of the cost implications of the mock primaries which do not foreclose the nomination proper since APC Executives at the various wards, LGAs and state would in turn schedule their own primaries for the final selection of party flag bearers.
Undertaking and participating, in the two stages of primaries according to most aspirants who spoke to Community Watchdog will take a huge toll on their finances which may not be enough to challenge the opposition PDP candidates who are boasting of marching them Naira for Naira and Okporoko for Okporoko in 2015.
At best, they reasoned that it is a ploy by the Governor to clandestinely coerce the various APC aspirants at all levels into investing their hard earned money in mobilizing the electorate for the benefit of the Governor who is an automatic candidate since there is no indication that anyone in APC has the courage to challenge him for the Governorship ticket.
Already some of the popular aspirants are threatening to dump APC for any of the existing opposition political parties should Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha insists on going ahead with conducting the already scheduled primaries on the 1st September 2014. Okorocha’s actions were equally described as selfish and targeted at frustrating those he believes may constitute obstacles to his unpopular character of running Imo State government as if it is a private business concern.
Others accused Okorocha of not being a team player and unconcerned about the political prospects of his fellow party men but more or else exploitative in nature. They attributed this conduct of his as responsible for the loss of Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency by Engr. Chidi Ibe who ordinarily was the candidate to beat going by his popularity.
