Federal Minister for Education extols Rector FEDPONEK: Urges other colleagues to emulate her.
The Federal Minister for Education Alhaji Ibrahim Shekranu last Sunday at Nekede formally installed Dr. Mrs. Ijeoma Njoku as the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede for the second tenure and lauded her for her land mark achievement to lift up the academic and infrastructure to a high level.
The Minister who was also at the college to commission a number of projects constructed by the Rector observed the high level of initiative adopted by her to achieve so much success with Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) a practice he called on other rectors to emulate in other to help the federal government in her education programme.
He observed that while others were waiting for allocation from the federal government to develop such infrastructure and administer their staff that Dr. Mrs. Njoku had gone ahead to generate enough funds to enable her prosecute these projects.
He stated so far the federal government under Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has spent a whooping sum of N140 billion in order to lay solid foundation for education in the country adding that government also gave free hands to these institutions which he observed to consolidate the effort of the government by creating environment for development.
He also stated that the federal government Universal Basic Education Programme has also done enough in terms of provision of education materials to primary and secondary
The Minister who came in company of the Minister of State of Education Prof. Viola Onwuliri commended the Rector of Polytechnic Nekede for ensuring the success of the seven poinvs of the present government in education.
In what turned out to be a disappointment to students of Federal Polytechnic Owerri as a result of the visitation by the Minister of Education, Mallam Shekranu, students of the school have lamented on the ill arrangement by the school management towards the event.
Speaking to Campus Voice, Uwakwa Stanley, a student of Purchasing and Supply complained that students were left running helter skelter as Man O War restricted them from having entrance in the school premises, some of the students, who wanted to make use of the school bank, were equally animated by the approach the get from the security on the school gate.
Uwakwe asked if they students are not part of the scheme of things in the school, he wondered why students should be prevented to meet with the minister; he asked if the school has skeleton in their cupboards the want/wish to hide from the students about the minister’s visit.
Adding her voice, is Vivian Igboeche of Mass Communicated question what she tagged “a bizarre discussion by the management” to lock students outside the campus and even went as far as chasing out students who lived in the school hostel, thereby keeping them uncomfortable for almost a day.
However, they equally expressed their happiness over the coming of the Minister, who kept to time and commissioned some newly elected structures meant for nine departments and equally inspected the ongoing projects after which he had a brief meeting with the board and finally left by 5:45PM after which students were allowed to enter the campus.
Maybe the management headed by the Rector will have to state their reason for such action.
