Ugboaku Chioma Nnorom is a simple peace loving forthright person. A Civil Servant born into the family of Deacon and Mrs. Boniface Ogu Nnorom of Eziokele Eziobodo in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
She is the last child out of four males and three females whom Deacon and Mrs. Boniface Ogu Nnorom were blessed with.
Though physically challenged, her parents did their best to train her to be self-reliant and in her different endeavours, she would rather work her way up than give in to self-pity. She never allowed her disability to take precedence and indeed, she is a very strong lady.
Education
Chioma started her education at home as her first teacher in life was her dear mother, Mrs. Patricia Nnorom. She learnt how to identify letters and numbers from her dear mother before primary school at Housing Estate Primary School Aladinma Owerri in 1983.
She went through the primary school like other pupils and passed to Egbu Girls Secondary School in 1989.
Her independent spirit helped her in Secondary School as she lived all through it in the hostel, mixing up with other children, irrespective of her disability. She did all these by pushing aside self-pity and fear, knowing that at the end of the day, she would be sitting for the same examination like others. This earned her much respect amongst her peers and she was seen as one of the most intelligent students in her time in school.
Her doggedness still manifested in Imo State University where she studied English and Literary Studies in 1996 and through her time in the campus, she never had academic hitches as she shuffled between lecture halls and library.
Faith in Christ
Having come from a Christian home, Chioma knew the dos and don’ts expected of her. Her father being a Deacon in the First Baptist Church Owerri, did his best to bring his children up with the word of God.
He was like the biblical that Joshua said: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”
Though with such background, she knew she was just living in self-righteousness. She was not yet born again, even though people saw her as a good girl. Deep down inside her heart, she was just a ‘whitewashed sepulcher’, full of rottenness.
However, on June 16, 1992, a friend invited her to one of the school fellowships, the Student Christian Movement [S.C.M] and there she heard the message that changed her life forever. She realized that though she may deceive others by pretending to be good, she could not deceive God.
Her leg would not be an excuse if she ever found herself in hell. Right there at the fellowship, she gave her life to Jesus Christ. Ever since, Jesus Christ has been her personal Lord and Savior and her everything.
Her growth in the Lord has given her the privilege to serve Him in and through various capacities. In that same school fellowship [SCM], she later became the prayer secretary.
As she entered the higher institution and still in SCM, she served as the Bible Study/Follow-up Coordinator, General Secretary and Music Director all to the glory of God.
Back in her home church, The First Baptist Church Owerri, she has served as the Prayer Coordinator in the Baptist Student Fellowship, Vice President and Bible Study Coordinator in the Lydia Auxiliary [a spinsters group in the Baptist Denomination] and she is presently a Sunday School Teacher and Praise Team Leader.
Singing
There was always music in her family as she grew up. Her father was a choir master in his younger days, and so naturally several of his children sang in the choir.
Back in her secondary school days, she had three friends, Evelyn, Chidinma and Akpobome who were good in singing. As young girls, they would always sing and talk about how they would join the ‘Maranatha Singers’ when they grow up.
Well, they are all grown now and none of them joined the Maranathana Singers, but the good thing is that they are still with the Lord and some of them still singing.
Chioma Nnorom started giving it the needed attention when she was in the University. She joined the fellowship’s choir and later became the Music Director of the fellowship.
Even during her National Youth Service Corps in 2002, she joined the Nigeria Christian Corpers Fellowship Imo State Chapter Choir and jointly, they produced an album ‘Build Us Lord’. She composed the only Igbo song in that album titled ‘Kele Chukwu’.
She sings in her church and other Christian gatherings. She also sang with Pastor Ben Nwachi in his Album, ‘My Year of Fruitfulness in 2010 and ‘Hallowed be Thy Name’ in 2010.
The Album ‘In Obedience’
The eight track album was released in April 2015 during the Nigerian Baptist Convention in Owerri, Imo State. The title, ‘In Obedience’ was an expression of her personal walk with Jesus. Each song in the album has a special message for the listeners.
Other activities
She loves reading and writing and has written some dramas with few of them acted on stage. Also, her articles have been published in various media and she loves listening to music as well.
Chioma Nnorom is lover of a serene environment as she draws inspiration from it.
Even when she was never involved in sports because of her challenges, but she still loves basketball.
