The second day industrial strike action embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, against the removal of petroleum subsidy by the federal government came with closure of all financial institutions and government ministries and schools in Imo State, South East-Nigeria.
Nigeria Newspoint which monitored the situation, disclosed that all banks in Owerri, the state capital, were Thursday under lock and key.
Government owned schools and the state secretariat were equally shut in full compliance of the protest by the NLC against the subsidy removal on petroleum.
While some banks shut operations both in the banking halls and Automated Teller Machines, ATM, others left the ATMs as the only source of transactions.
Bank customers who besieged their banks for early morning transactions were left stranded and frustrated as they could not gain access into the banks.
The ATMs which became the only source of financial transactions, became a bee hive of activities, as customers struggled to do their transactions.
The state commissioner of police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu and his entourage were seen around the banks, which an impeccable source said the CP was begging the bank managers to open operations.
While the banks, Ministries and schools were shut down, it was a different ball game for traders and commercial drivers in the state capital, as the markets and transporters were in full operations, engaging in their daily activities
