As part of measures in commending the executive governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha on his efforts in the construction of roads and other infrastructure, the state House of Assembly, on Wednesday, during its plenary session, passed a resolution, urging the state government via the ministry of works and the Federal Roads’ Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to take urgent steps in repairing the damaged Ekemele-spot along the Owerri-Okigwe road in Akabo, Ikeduru LGA.
Speaking on a motion of urgent public Importance, as moved by Hon (Dr.) Uche Oguwuike member for Ikeduru State-Constituency, the lawmaker urged the Assembly to intervene, given the fact that, the road in disrepair poses grave danger to the Imo public who-ply the road on daily basis.
The Ikeduru lawmaker, also, emphasized that, since the FERMA which is vested with the sole responsibility of maintaining federal roads, such as the Okigwe-Owerri road is relenting in this regard, there is need for the governor in collaboration with the House committee on works to remedy the state of the road-damage at Ekemele.
Supporting the motion, the member representing Mbaitoli State-Constituency, Hon. Ifeanyi Nnataraonye (Olugbu), who also, seconded the motion as moved by Hon. Oguwuike, informed that, efforts of the governor, Okorocha on road construction and rehabilitation should not be in futility, as he stated that, the Owerri-Okigwe road in the state links the state capital with Ikeduru, Mbaitoli, Ehime Mbano, Onuimo and Okigwe LGAs in the state.
Also speaking in supporting of the motion, Hon. Lugard Osuji (Majority leader) and member for Owerri Municipal state-constituency drew the attention of the House led by the Speaker, Chief Acho Ihim on the establishment of a petrol station in a borrow-pit dug to checkmate floods erosion at the Ekemele-spot, which he said, worsened the road damage.
Consequently, the Assembly resolved to bring attention of the FERMA on the damaged spot, call on Gov. Okorocha to direct the state Ministry of Works to sustain maintenance on road, as it also, resolved that, the committee should investigate the establishment of the filling station and get back to the IMHA on June 2, 2016.
