In its passionate appeal to end the lingering strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Imo State University chapter, the Imo State House, last week passed a resolution, calling for the suspension of the strike in the interest of parents and students of the state University, Owerri.
In a motion of urgent public importance, moved by the Deputy Speaker of the House and member for Nwangele state-constituency, Hon. Ugonna Ozuruigbo, the Assembly considered paramount, the wellbeing of IMSU students most of whom have been rendered hopeless in their academic pursuit.
Earlier in his explanation of the essence of the motion, which attracted overwhelming support of the Members of Parliament (MPs) in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Ozuruigbo emphasized that something serious should be done about the ASUU strike in IMSU, adding that, given the fact that the youths are the future leaders, if IMSU students who bear the brunt of the strike, continue to suffer the aftermath, the future of Imo State may continue to be jeopardized.
Also, appealing for the quick intervention of the Assembly’s committee on Education in checkmating the ugly development in the state, Hon. Ozuruigbo, further regretted that with the development, IMSU students of the law faculty may continue missing their chances of attending the law school, while others find the NYSC assignment elusive.
In their contributions, Hon. (Mrs) Uche Ejiogu (Ihitte/Uboma) and Hon. Uche Oguwuike (Ikeduru) suggested urgent intervention of the state legislature, as mediators between the governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and the IMSU-ASUU authorities, as Hon. Oguwuike lamented that fresh students may lose one academic year as fresher’s due to the strike.
Consequently, the Assembly resolved that the ASUU, IMSU chapter should emulate other universities in calling off the strike by way of dialogue. While setting up a committee in a bid to ensure that the strike is ends.
The committee comprised of Hon. (Mrs) Uche Ejiogu (Ihitte-Uboma) as chairman. Members are; Hon. Ike Amuka (Ideato-South), Hon. Kennedy Ibeh (Obowo), Hon. Donatus Onuigwe (Oru-West) and Hon. Uche Oguwuike (Ikeduru).
