Rising from an emergency meeting of the Governing Council of Imo State Polytechnic with the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Non Academic Staff Union, NASU and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, SSANIP, the strike embarked upon by the three unions in the Polytechnic has been temporarily suspended.

Addressing members at the meeting held Monday June 6, Chief Charles Amadi, Chairman, Governing Council of the Polytechnic appealed to the leadership of the three unions to suspend the industrial action so as to allow time for dialogue.

While promising that the council would bring justice to the affected workers of the polytechnic, Chief Amadi assured the unions that all their complaints would be reviewed in the council’s next meeting.
Responding, the ASUP Chairman, Mr. Desmond Echeta who spoke on behalf of the other unions, noted that the union members were pursuing their welfare packages legitimately.

Mr Echeta however, assured the council chairman that his efforts in bringing solution to the problems in the polytechnic would be complemented by the unions.

It will be recalled that members of ASUP, NASU and SSANIP of Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo,had on Monday 6th June, handed over notice of strike to the management of the polytechnic.

The striking unions complained among other things; the non-payment of their April and May salaries, termination of appointments of some academic and non-academic staff, demotion and placement of some staff on redundancy.
