The Election of Imo State Chapter of Christian Council of Nigeria (CAN) which was scheduled to hold on Friday July, 22, 2016, could not hold after series of argument between accredited voters.
That would be the third time the election has failed to hold since 2016 according to reports. Outgoing president Bishop Stanford Nwogu could not see to the successful handing over to the next president in the election which had the National Legal Adviser of the Association present.
Before the elections, the legal adviser criticized the state CAN for the tension they have mounted on the electioneering processes, urging them to remember that the Association is for God and not political.
The Initial problem came up when Local Government Coordinators where screened out of the electoral college and when that was sorted out, majority of the electoral college voted against the report of the electoral committee, alleging that it has been doctored to favour a certain candidate.
With no valid report and guideline from the electoral committee, the election failed to hold which meant the Bishop Nwogu will still remain in office till further notice.
Some members who spoke to www.otowngist.com criticized the level of politics in the Association questioning their commitment to God’s work.
“If we can’t hold a simple election, how can we then mount the pulpit and criticize the government of the day when they play their usual politics. God is really not happy with this association and it is a pity how respected men of would be disgracing themselves in the name of politics. God save us,” of accredited voters said.
