In what appeared like a swift move for a political empowerment, the People of Owerri zone have begun a move to make sure that the outgoing governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, hands over power to the zone in 2019.
Speaking shortly after his inauguration, the president of Olu Owerri Unity Association, Chief Martin Opara, said that discussions were in advanced stages with Okigwe and Orlu zones to make sure that a Governor of Owerri zone extraction becomes a reality in the next political dispensation.
Chief Opara, stressed that morality and political consideration make it imperative that the zone which is the only zone in the state yet to produce a governor since the return of democracy in 1999 is supported by the brother zones to occupy the state governorship diadem in the next two years.
The president who understood the daunting nature of the demand, asserted that the people of the state were known for justice and fair play, adding that signs were clearer that their agitation would be given acceptable consideration this time by the people of the state
Chief Opara, informed that the newly formed sociocultural Association would work assiduously towards deepening the cultural and religious values of the people of the zone.
He averred that all the leaders of the zone would be engaged towards finding the perfect plan that would make the zone the envy of the other zones of the state.
According to him “we understand the strategic position of Owerri in Imo nay Nigeria. We are engaging all political, religious, academic, cultural leaders of the zone with the aim of finding a perfect blueprint for the development of the zone”.
