Imo State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike The Commissioner of Police in Imo state, Chris Ezike, on Tuesday urged the members of the state House of Assembly to enact laws that would prescribe stiffer punishment for cult members in the state.
Addressing lawmakers at the Assembly complex in Owerri, the state capital, Ezike urged them to imitate other states of the federation by punishing cult members severely in the state.
He said most of the existing laws on cultism in the state constrain most judges to give stringent punishment for cult members when arraigned.
He said, “Cultism has penetrated into secondary schools and if nothing urgent is done, it will cripple the state.” Ezike also said the police most stop extortion in order to win back the trust of the people, adding that the 5,500 policemen of the command could not fight crime alone.
The CP said, “We seek your partnership in fighting crime in Imo state. You have to look at the laws again and find ways of making them stiffer in our collective efforts to eradicate crime in our society.
The speaker of the state House of Assembly, Acho Ihim, said the lawmakers would partner the police to fight crime by reviewing laws on cultism.
