The State House of Assembly has given reasons for rejecting the proposed Local Government Autonomy and abrogation of the local government Joint Accounts.
A release by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Mr. Marcel Ekwezuo says the house took the decision in the overall interest of the people of the State and South East geo-political region.
The release explains that accepting the proposed bills by the law makers will lead to a reduction of over one point two four percent of the State’s/region’s already meager resources which will amount to hundreds of billions of Naira per annum.
It also says that out of the thirty six (36) States and Abuja sub divided into six (6) geo-political regions, the South East has the least number of five (5) States and ninety five (95) Local Government Areas.
The release further said revenue allocations from the federation accounts are presently shared on the principle of equality of States where the States in the South-East can collectively receive up to thirteen point five one (13.51) percent.
The House of Assembly therefore reasoned that it will be a disservice to the people for it to go for the proposed bills which would reduce the paltry allocation sum given to the States.
