Most governorship aspirants jostling for the exalted governorship ticket of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA in Imo State may be unfazed over the huge influx of decampees from other political parties.
This is coming on the heels of Senator Araraume’s move to APGA on September 1
With the reported defection of a staunch APC chieftain and serial governorship aspirant, Senator Ifeanyi Araraume from the APC to APGA, concern were raised that most APGA chieftains will fret over the Senator’s reported entrance.
Senator Araraume has been rated a solid politician with an inelastic ability ability to win party primaries. He had won the governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in 2006 and re- enacted the same feat in 2015, twin victories he was later denied of the party’s flag in controversial circumstances.
Adjudged master of party primaries owing to his mastery in outpacing his co aspirants, his reported entrance into APGA barely 35 days to its primaries is indeed raising divided opinions.
None of the governorship aspirants in APGA when contacted agreed to speak to this newspaper on the Senator’s reported defection.
One of them from Owerri zone said “It is news we all read in the newspapers. Nothing concrete yet until he formally joins the party”
An aide of another aspirant said there is no law banning anyone from joining the party.
“We know ourselves and we know those who want to stroll into the party and take advantage of its popularity and win elections and when they get into office, they jump to another political party.
“APGA must reward its own this time around. Gone are the days the party is a mere ladder politicians use it to rise to power and dump it thereafter”
APGA had produced Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha in 2011 but he dumped the party and leapfrogged into the All Progressive Congress. Okorocha later described the party as a cultural organization.
