A septuagenarian, Rasheed Adebayo, has been arrested by the police for allegedly torturing his grandson, Fuad Badmus, in the Oko-Oba, Agege area of Lagos State.
It was learnt that the 18-year-old was staying with his maternal grandfather on a holiday visit.
Adebayo was alleged to have flogged his grandson with a cane for allegedly stealing N1,000, inflicting injuries all over his body on Saturday, August 11, 2018.
The case was reported to the police and the 71-year-old was arrested.
Pictures of the victim, which had gone viral on the social media, drew a lot of reactions from Nigerians, who condemned the brutality.
However, the suspect was wrongly presumed to be Badmus’ uncle.
A Facebook user, Misheck Mutantabowa said the teenager’s offence was not commensurate with the punishment.
Another poster, Kejawa Dupe, said the suspect might have a psychiatric problem.
An Instagram user @nenyewest, described the flogging as a “pure act of wickedness.”
Another user @boladokiss, wrote, “Wretchedness has made a lot of people’s children leave their homes and stay with some irresponsible family. Here is a disadvantage. He must be arrested.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, confirmed the incident, adding that the case would be charged to court at the completion of investigation.
He said, “On Saturday, a case of assault occasioning harm and child abuse was reported by one Chief Jonathan Bakare against one Rasheed Adebayo, who unlawfully used a cane on his grandson and gave him injuries all over his body for stealing N1,000.
“Investigation is still ongoing and it has been transferred to the Gender Section of the Isokoko Police Station. At the completion of investigation, the suspect will be charged to court.”
