Delegates from Imo state who will vote during People’s Democratic Party presidential primary on Saturday in Port Harcourt, Rivers state are torn between president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and the governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal, investigation reveals.
The delegates, our correspondent learnt are being wooed by two top leaders of the party in the state who are supporting the presidential ambitions of Saraki and Tambuwal, respectively.
While the Senate committee chairman on Ethics,Privileges and Public Petitions,Senator Samuel Anyanwu is mobilising support for Saraki,Ihedioha, who is the PDP governorship candidate in the state, is supporting Tambuwal.
Ihedioha was the deputy to Tambuwal when he was the speaker of the House of representatives between 2011 and 2015.
Sources from the camps of the politicians told our correspondent on Friday that Anyanwu and Ihedioha were hugely wooing delegates from the state to vote for their preferred presidential aspirants.
A source at the PDP Secretariat in Owerri said “senator Samuel Anyanwu and our governorship candidate, Emeka Ihedioha are wooing national delegates from Imo state to vote for Saraki and Tambuwal respectively.”
“You know that Ihedioha having served as the deputy speaker when Tambuwal was the speaker of the House of representatives enjoys exceptional relationship with the Sokoto state speaker.”
“Ihedioha has not hidden his support for the presidential ambition of Tambuwal and he is making everything humanly possible to make sure his long time political friend emerges on Saturday as the presidential candidate of PDP.”
“Senator Anyanwu on his part is throwing his weight and resources behind his colleague who is the president of the Senate. Senator Anyanwu is very grateful to Saraki for appointing him the chairman of a very viable committee in the state even though he is a first time senator.”
“The senator is not hiding his support for Saraki. He has said it severally and has told us that Saraki will pick the presidential ticket.”
Ihedioha had during Tambuwal’s visit to the state on Wednesday urged the delegates of the party to vote for the Sokoto state governor during the presidential primary on Saturday.
Anyanwu, also admonished the national delegates of the party to support the presidential ambition of Saraki when the former Kwara state governor visited the state to woo delegates for votes.
