No fewer than 11, 000 candidates are currently sitting for the ongoing 2019 post UTME screening exercise of the Imo State University, IMSU, Owerri.

Last year, the institution recorded about 7, 000 candidates from which the university offered admissions to those that met the required scores stipulated for various courses in the university.

Speaking to journalists, at the venue of on the ongoing exercise, Prof. Nkwam Uwaoma, Deputy Vice Chancellor, (Academics) attributed the increased number to the ingenuity of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Victoria Adaobi Obasi.

Prof. Uwaoma, who is also the IMSU 2019 Post UTME and Admission Committee Chairman, also identified the encouraging level of academic and infrastructural development in the university as part of the factors that necessitated the increased number.

According to him, “the University under the leadership of the VC has been well positioned in terms of academic excellence and having conducive learning environment which also accounts to why most parents and guardians across the country want to bring in their children and wards to the institution”.

“Factors for increase include fairness and transparency in admission process and policies, available and accredited courses, quality and dedicated staff, recent infrastructural development, stability of academic environment (rare strikes) and focused management style.”

He also disclosed the efforts made by the institution to wade of miscreants from the exercise and to ensure transparency and credibility of the process, which he said has be going on smoothly and peacefully.

He pointed out that some persons who intended to manipulate the process were readily apprehended by the school and handed over to the security agencies to serve as a deterrent to others who thought “it was business as usual”.

Also, one of the management staff of the institution who spoke to Newsmen on camera, added, “basically, the major reason is because of the person leading the system and I think she has done very well.

“Also, the DVC, Prof Nkwam Uwaoma who is in charge of the exercise, uses his wealth of knowledge as a Clinical Psychologist to make it impossible for imposters and those who cut corners to have their way in the post UTME exercise.”

Equally some of candidates who spoke to Newsmen expressed satisfaction with the exercise, stressing that it was entirely hitch-free, transparent and convenient.

Daily Nigerian Horn gathered that the screening exercise which started on Monday would end on Saturday and results of the participants are made ready at the end of each day.
