Mrs. Ukachukwu said in a lecture she delivered in Owerri, Imo State, weekend, that nipple discharges, dryness of skin around the breast area, irritation, dimple of the breast, and lump are signs of breast cancer.
According to her, men are not exempt in suffering breast cancer, stressing however that cases of cancer infection in men are fewer than women.
She called for regular medical and breast check-up to avert breast cancer.
Mrs. Ukachukwu identified hereditary, smoking, aging, obesity, abuse of contraceptives, inadequate breastfeeding, stress among others as the causes of breast cancer.
Also speaking, founder of a non-governmental organization (NGO), Survivors Voice International, Mrs. Obianuju Monde-Anumihe lamented that breast cancer has killed many women especially in Nigeria, noting that women are vulnerable to the disease.
Monde-Anumihe who survived breast cancer 13 years ago noted that regular medical check-up and early detection are the keys to survival of breast cancer.
Earlier, the Imo State first lady, Mrs. Ebere Ihedioha commended the NGO for its humanitarian services.
The governor’s wife was represented on the occasion by Mrs. Nkiruka Ibekwe, the State Commissioner for Gender and Vulnerable Persons.
Mrs. Ihedioha assured of her willingness to partner her in creating awareness on breast cancer and the need for regular breast examination to avert the disease.
Highlight of the event was a three-kilometre walk staged by the NGO to create awareness on breast cancer and free medical examination of about 200 women using mammogram testing kit.
