There was panic in Anara , Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State , on Monday , as policemen attached to the Anara Police Division beat a young man of around 25 unconscious.
The policemen had gone for random arrest in the evening at the St . Innocent ’s junction in Anara and started beating the young man when he tried to inquire why he was being arrested .
Our correspondent learnt that while the policemen were holding and beating the victim , other youths in the area fled out of fear .
Members of the community , on Tuesday , beseeched the Anara Police Division in protest .
They demanded the prosecution of the policemen , who beat their son to a state of unconsciousness .
Displaying placards with various inscriptions , the protesters decried the high level of police brutality , extortion and wickedness in the community .
One of the youth leaders in the community , Marcel Onuoha, said the victim had been rushed to a hospital in Owerri after he was rejected by the one he was initially taken to.
Onuoha, who expressed fear on the health condition of the victim , said the community was currently boiling .
He called on the Inspector – General of Police and the state Commissioner of Police , Rabiu Ladodo, to fish out the policemen who brutalised the victim .
Our correspondent learnt that one policeman , popularly known as Blackly , was allegedly responsible for beating the victim .
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state , Orlando Ikeokwu , said the leadership of the command would handle the situation.
He promised that justice would be served even as he urged the villagers not to take the law into their own hands .
