There are palpable fears in Imo State as the National Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, released its latest figure of confirmed COVID-19 cases.
According to the report, there are 229 new coronavirus cases confirmed with Imo State having 26 new confirmed cases.
Daily Nigerian Horn discovered that the 26 new cases were as a result of 96 Almajiris allegedly being smuggled into the state.
According to a credible source, when the vehicle conveying these Almajiris to the state were intercepted, about 26 tested positive to COVID-19.
Meanwhile a top state government official who craved for anonymity when contacted insited that there are no coronavirus in Imo State.
Confronted with the latest figure as released by the NCDC, he confirmed that the vehicle bringing the 96 Almajiris.
But Imolites who spoke with the newspaper accused the government of complicity and not letting Imo people know the state of things concerning COVID-19.
A political scientist who does not want his name in print said, “If it is true that 26 Almajiris smuggled into the state tested positive and the government claimed that the vehicle was sent back, how do the government monitor the vehicle whether it actually went back or not considering the lockdown in the federation. How are the state government sure that many Almajiris with COVID-19 are not already in the state considering the complicity of some security official assigned to man the boundary of the state.”
“This shows that the state government is deceiving our people and this could be fatal as many of these Almajiris may have been smuggled before this latest one”.
For now, the fear of another lockdown by Governor Hope Uzodimma looms as Imolites have not fully complied with the safety measures as directed by the NCDC.
