Imo State Government has kicked off the construction of underground tunnels in some paths of Owerri to solve the reoccurring flood problem in the state capital.

The state government is constructing a 1.8m radius underground Tunnel drainage system stretching from Dick Tiger Street, green verge at Chukwuma Nwoha road and down to Otamiri River to solve the flooding problem around Federal Housing Estate, Owerri which has seen the loss of properties worth millions of naira in the past.

The project which is being handled by Leo9 Asphalt and Construction Ltd, will also see the company build roads from Chukwuma Nwoha, Dick Tiger and Relief Market, Methodist/Shoprite road with drainages and walkways at both sides.

”We will take it from Relief Market across Egbu road down to Otamiri. We will also take it from Dick Tiger/Chukwuma Nwaoha and then to Otamiri,” project director, Oliver Njoku said as quoted by IfeanyiCY Blog.

The company will also build another 900mm by 900mm drainage system stretching from Chukwuma Nwoha at MCC Road, to Relief Market, Dick Tiger and Methodist Bus stop that will chanel the water down to the main underground tunnel which will then evacuate at Otamiri river.
