In an effort to curtail the spread of the ravaging Coronavirus pandemic, Imo State Council of Ndi Eze has advised Governor Hope Uzodinma led government not to lift the ban on cultural festivals across the 647 Autonomous Communities of the State.
Chairman, Imo State Council of Ndi Eze,HRM,Eze Samuel Agunwa Ohiri disclosed this to Journalists on Monday shortly after their emergency Council meeting at the Council Secretariat, Owerri.
Eze Ohiri stated that the Council Members of Imo State Council of Ndi Eze comprises of the State Chairman, Deputy, Chairmen of the 27 LGA Council of Ndi Eze who according to him, is the highest decision making body of the Council.
The Royal Father emphasised that the advise for the State government not to lift the ban on cultural festivals in the state became necessary as the month of June marks the beginning of cultural festivals in the state.
The Obi of Obi-Orodo pointed out that if cultural festivals are allowed to hold in various communities of the State now,that it will increase the spread of Coronavirus pandemic and added that, people from within and outside the state will gather in numbers to be part of the festival thereby violating the rules set up by Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC against COVID -19 pandemic.
He however appealed to the state government not to delay in giving the directive as it will go along way to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the state ,especially in rural areas where the majority of Imo people resides.
Eze Imo equally used the opportunity to commend Governor Hope Uzodinma on his efforts at reducing the spread of coronavirus in Imo State as well as setting up isolation centres across the state.
He also appreciated the Chairman, taskforce on COVID-19 ,Prof. Maurice Iwu and all the front line health workers for their efforts at combating the spread of the dreaded pandemic in the State.
The medical scientists however thanked the Governor Senator Hope Uzodinma for inaugurating the Imo State Community policing Committee with traditional Rulers as members and assured that the Council will support them to succeed.
