PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY, IMO STATE
Press Statement
DSS Denies Nwaogwugwu Access To Lawyer And Family
… Tension Mounts Over His Safety

The Peoples Democratic Party in Imo State wishes to use this medium to formally inform the relevant authorities of government at all levels that Comrade Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, who was arrested on May 28, 2020 has not been allowed to see any lawyer and any member of his family for the entire seven days that he has been detained by the Directorate of State Security (DSS). This despite every effort and entreaties made by his lawyer, all efforts by the family members to see him has equally been rebuffed by DSS on the orders of Government Hope Uzodimma.

The situation has led to the exposure of the young man to vagaries of hunger and illness, since there are reportedly no evidence that he is being fed. Moreover he has been forced to wear the same clothes he was arrested in a weak ago.

We have heard from a reliable source that the DSS Director and operatives have been torturing Ambrose Nwaogwugwu with enough intimidations aimed at forcefully getting confessional statement from him. We have also heard that the DSS is coercing the PDP New Media D. G. to write an apology for fabrication and concoctions aimed at roping him with the aim of using same to convict him.

As it is now, in the absence of contact with Comrade Nwaogwugwu, coupled with reports from sources in the DSS offices in Owerri, our Party now believe the information that all is not well with the continued detention of Comrade Nwaogwugwu by the DSS after the mandatory constitutional 48 hours allowed by law. We will remind that the dictatorial tendencies of the Uzodimma regime in Imo State have fouled international democratic best practices.

To that extent, we want to state that going forward we have handed over the life, welfare and well-being of comrade Nwaogwugwu to both the DSS Director in Imo State, Mrs. Iguor Worrey and the State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma. That is because of their direct acceptance of responsibility for the arrest and detention of Comrade Nwaogwugwu.

Meanwhile, in the past one week that the Imo PDP, New Media Director-General has been in unlawful detention by the DSS, our Party has been inundated with barrages of calls, texts and emails from members of the Party from across the State, whom we have had to continually restrained from venting their angst, and encouraging them to remain law-abiding citizens. However, with the refusal by the DSS to allow us and our lawyer access to Comrade Nwaogwugwu we can no longer guarantee our restraint on Imo people on whatever they want to do about his continued detention.

That said, as a democratic and law-abiding Party, we would continue to urge Imo people and members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding.
It may be pertinent to remind that since the arrest and detention of Comrade Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, Imo PDP has been making very tireless efforts to see him both through the top leadership echelon of the Party and by the Party’s lawyers. Also, a delegation of the leadership of the Party paid a solidarity visit to the Owerri residence of the Nwaogwugwu family on Saturday May 30, 2020 and met his mother, Mrs. Anna Nwaogwugwu and sister, Miss Florence Nwaogwugwu, and unflinchingly, our Party announces that we stand with Comrade Ambrose Nwaogwugwu under the unfortunate circumstances.

Signed:
Ogubundu Nwadike,
