Hard times await power consumers in Nigeria, following the hike of prepaid meters by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
It was learnt that the commission had increased the price for a three-phase meter from N67,055 to N82,855.19, while the cost of a single-phase meter was increased from N36,991 to N44,896.16.
It was further gathered that the new prices were contained in a memo signed by the NERC chairman, Prof. James Momoh, pegging the new price pursuant to section 19(d) of the Meter Asset Providers Regulation.
Meanwhile NERC on Tuesday announced its intention to enforce its decision of ensuring customers not given electricity meters are not disconnected.
The electricity regulatory agency disclosed this through its twitter handle, @ NERCNG.
It listed the affected DISCos to include those in Benin, Enugu, Eko, Ikeja, Kano, Kaduna and Port Harcourt. NERC gave the DISCos 14 days beginning from June 4 to explain why they should not be sanctioned over their alleged non-compliance.
