It has been revealed why the recently appointed Governing Council Chairman of Imo State University (IMSU) Owerri, Most Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Lucius Ugorji abruptly resigned his appointment, few days ago.

Sources close to the Naze born highly cerebral Cleric explained that for some times now, the Bishop had severally approached Governor Uzodinma on the proper funding of the University with the request that the State owned tertiary institution cannot run or fund itself. As at the time of his resignation there has not been any positive response to his moves and request from Hope Uzodinma. Reverend Fr. Dr. Lucius Ugorji said he could not understand how Uzodinma expected him to preside over an underfunded and stagnant University as a man of God.

According to our source who pleaded anonymity, the Co-ordinator of the embattled Ahiara Catholic Diocese observed that the University is not being run as an institution of higher learning deserving of Imo State University status and that in order to avoid dabbling into any mess, the reputable and illustrious Cleric opted to resign.

Another source close to the University said one of the discouraging factors that led to the resignation of the highly celebrated and distinguished Cleric and Bishop of Umuahia Catholic Diocese is the suggestion that the University authorities should use TETFUND monies meant for infrastructures to pay salaries of workers which did not augur well with him.

He had earlier met with the Governor with a litany of complaints and as alleged Uzodinma kept him in suspense while he was rather inundated with receiving calls over the non-payment of salaries of Imo State University Staff.

All efforts to reach the Catholic Bishop to confirm from him of the development proved abortive.
