Former Vice -Chancellor , University of Lagos , Akoka, Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, has died at the age of 71.
The PUNCH confirmed that he died on Sunday in Lagos .
Though there are reports that he died of COVID -19, our correspondent could not immediately confirm this .
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities , UNILAG branch , Dr Dele Ashiru , confirmed the former VC ’ s death.
The ASUU chairman described Ashiru as a quintessential educationist, saying that he will greatly be missed in the education sector .
Ibidapo-Obe, was the President of the Nigeria Academy of Science . He attended both Ilesa Grammar School and Igbobi College from 1962 – 1968 and the University of Lagos from 1968 – 1971.
He was appointed substantive Vice -Chancellor on 1 st May , 2002 and successfully served until the end of his tenure on 30th April 2007.
He was conferred with the national honour as Officer of the Federal Republic ( OFR ) by the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2004. He was the Apeluwa of Ile -Ife .
