About nine inmates who escaped from a jailbreak of Owerri Prisons have been apprehended in Ghana.

Over 1,800 inmates escaped from Owerri Prisons on Easter Monday after unknown gunmen attacked Owerri Correctional Centre, alongside the State Police headquaters, Owerri.

According to spokesman of Nigeria Correctional Service, NCos, Francis Enobore, the inmates were still undergoing profiling ,stating that the Interpol and the Ghanaian security agencies are working to establish the identities of the inmates who were arrested by the Ghanaian Police Force at Ada Foah on April 19.

He said the fugitives would be repartiated to the country after the necessary international protocols had been observed.

He said at the time of their arrest, the suspects were found with Ghanaian and Nigerian currencies, personal belongings, passports, and ID cards.

Enobore said the case involved multiple agencies from two different countries, hence the need to follow the estalished international protocols usually in such cases.

“They (security agencies) have to profile them and establish their identities. This is ongoing in collaboration with the interpol. As as soon as that is done, the normal protocol of repartiating them through the immigration service will be done

“It is a process that involves different agencies, when one agency concludes its own, it would push the case to another agency. It is a case that has to go with different countries so you have to be careful to ensure that no mistakes are acomodated and no international protocol is breached. The process is ongoing.

He said the service is still expanding it’s dragnets and expanding the ongoing tracking to other areas “where we can harvest information that will lead to apprehending other fleeing inmates”
