President Muhammadu Buhari has said Nigeria would have gone through a terrible period during the peak of COVID-19 if not for his administration’s policies.
Buhari spoke on Wednesday at a bilateral meeting at the margins of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The President recalled that before the pandemic, Nigeria closed its borders with neighbouring countries.
He explained that the decision was to encourage farmers and further promote local consumption.
“People went back to the land, and this helped us tremendously. We made fertilizers available, resuscitated dams, and it all paid off handsomely.
“Otherwise, with about 200 million people, we would have been in trouble when COVID-19 struck, and affected the economy.”
Buhari urged investors to put money in Nigeria’s agriculture sector, assuring that farmers are receptive to modern ways, especially in respect of cutting post-harvest waste.
“We have the land, we have the people, capital input is what we need”, he added.
