The Osborne Foreshore Phase 2 Residents Association has urged the Lagos State Government to enforce building laws to curb the incessant structural collapses in different areas in the state.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos on Monday, the association’s chairperson, Chinwe Ezenwa-Mbah, said some developers in the estate are brazenly flouting approval orders.
She explained that the estate was developed and managed by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing until it was transferred to Lagos State.
Ezenwa-Mbah said, “With the transfer of the estate to Lagos State, approval orders were introduced which altered the original concept of the estate by the introduction of institutional and mixed-use developments.
“Our estate is experiencing rapid development. From a population of about 10 households 15 years ago, we are now in the region of 150 households and still growing.
“The kernel of this press conference is to highlight the untoward activities of some developers in our estate, who glaringly contravene all known approval orders and claim to have the appropriate planning approvals from the Lagos State regulatory agencies.
“They brazenly declare, at every interaction with the OSFRA or whoever may choose to inquire, that they are not in contravention of any Lagos State planning law.” ,,
“All requests by OSFRA to sight the planning approval authorising their developments are always rebuffed with the posturing that we do not have legal right to request for their planning approvals.”
She urged the state government to enforce the existing laws to avert future building collapse leading to loss of lives and property.
