Matt Doran was all smiles as he landed in London for an exclusive interview with Adele earlier this month, but he found himself in the hot seat after admitting was unprepared for the sit-down.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Channel 7 reporter Matt Doran was suspended for two weeks after he admitted to Adele that he hadn’t listened to her latest album during an interview with her. Doran flew from Sydney to London on November 4th for the exclusive interview, which Adele reportedly walked out on after he offended her.
The Daily Telegraph reports Doran didn’t ask any questions about Adele’s new album during the interview, and admitted to the singer he hadn’t heard it after she asked his thoughts on the project.
The network reportedly spent $1 million on the package, including broadcast rights to Oprah Winfrey’s One Night Only interview and concert. Although Adele’s interview was recorded, her label reportedly denied Channel 7 rights to air any of it.
Doran told The Australian that he is mortified and unequivocally apologetic” after the incident.
“When I sat down to interview Adele, I was totally unaware that I’d been emailed a preview of her unreleased album,” he said. “I have since discovered it was sent to me as an ‘e card’ link, which I somehow missed upon landing in London.”
After catching some backlash from fellow journalists accusing him of “snubbing” Adele, Doran insisted the comment was just a mistake.
“It was an oversight but NOT a deliberate snub,” Doran said. “This is the most important email I have ever missed. “I’m utterly confounded. I’ve implored Sony to release the interview.”
