A dusk-to-dawn curfew was on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 imposed on Ikono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State to check the rising cases of cult related activities which mostly are perpetrated at night.
The council chairman, Mr. Nyakno Uwemedimo Okoibu, who announced this in a statement signed by his press secretary Nsisong Ntuk and obtained by our correspondent in Uyo said the curfew which starts from the hour of 6pm-6am daily would last till further notice.
He said the restriction order was necessary in order to tackle the rise in killings and looting if property in the area as a result of the cult related activities.
He added that government would not fold its hands and watch innocent people maimed and property looted by the miscreants without doing anything.
The statement reads in part, “The chairman of Ikono LGA, has imposed a total restrictions of movement of persons, motorcycles, keke, cars, etc. within the perimeters of Ikono Local Government Area, from the hours of 6pm to 6am daily, effective from December 28, 2021 until further notice.
“The ban, though painful, is a child of necessity and is therefore in the overall best interest of every well meaning indigene of Ikono and other citizens residing in the Council Area. ”
“As a responsible Government, we cannot fold our arms and watch events go the other way round. We must be proactive.”
He, however, urged security operatives to increase the tempo of surveillance and monitoring, in order to forestall the killings by cultists operating within the local government area and its environments.
He also urged the people to cooperate with the security agencies by reporting suspicious movement of person and volunteer information that could lead to arrest of the criminal elements in the council area.
