The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, has accused the police of sabotaging the fight against bandits by releasing arrested bandits.

Mr Wase, who moved a motion on Tuesday on the floor of the House on the killings in his constituency, said police have been conniving with suspected bandits.

The deputy speaker, who represents Wase Federal Constituency of Plateau State, cited a case of abduction of his driver’s wife, he said the suspect was arrested, but released by the police.

He also cited another case in Kaduna, where bandits were arrested but were subsequently released by the police. He stated that he “informed the Kaduna State governor, Nasir Elrufai of the release by the police.”

Nasir Ali, a member of the APC from Kano, questioned how the government is able to deploy thousands of security personnel to states for elections, but unable to protect lives and properties.

Also speaking on the motion, Emeka Azubogu from Anambra State said the insecurity in Nigeria is affecting the economy. He noted that “Borno State is no contributing to the economy, because of insecurity.”

The minority leader, Ndudi Elumelu criticised the ruling APC for the security, noting that the party has failed.

Consequently, the House resolved that the Minister of Defence should initiate a joint security operation to flush out bandits in Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba and Nasarawa states.

Also, the Department of State Services and Directorate of Military Intelligence was directed to gather intelligence information on the influx, camping and operations of bandits within Wase Federal Constituency and adjoining towns.

The Speaker also set up an ad hoc committee to investigate and submit a report in two weeks.
