A military officer’s pregnant wife, Sara Freeman David, has been convicted and sentenced to six months in jail for burning her 11-year-old housegirl, Esther Emoita, with a hot pot in Adamawa State.

Heavily pregnant Sara Freeman, believed to be due for delivery soon, was charged with child abuse and causing grievous hurt, contrary to Sections 209 and 218 of the Penal Code.

The convict was found to have burnt the housegirl with a hot iron pot at her back and right hand.

The Chief Magistrate Court I Yola convicted the 27-year-old Sara of Army Barracks Jimeta after she was found to have committed the offence.

Documents filed in the case indicated that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) reported the matter at the Karewa Police Station on 27th October 2021.

The commission, which took the little girl to the police, had alleged that the wife of the military officer used a hot iron pot on her.

It said that the woman had been maltreating the child, and sought the intervention of the police.

Following the complaint, the woman was arrested and charged to court on the 4th November 2021 for the alleged offence and she pleaded guilty.

At the court’s resumed sitting on Tuesday, she maintained her guilty plea and pleaded for mercy.

Ruling, Chief Magistrate Abdullahi Mohammed Digil convicted and sentenced the defendant to six months in prison but gave her an option of a N25,000 fine.

It was gathered on Wednesday that the affected child has been returned to Always Inimical State and reunited with her biological parents.
