The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons on Monday raised an alarm over the increasing rate of child trafficking in Rivers State.
The agency called on the general public to be watchful of the increasing menace.
The Coordinator of NAPTIP in Rivers State, Ikediachi Nwamaka, in an interview in Port Harcourt said the trend is becoming worrisome.
She said children are now being taken away from their parents for unknown purposes.
She expressed worry that the trend is often more pronounced at the beginning of every year.
The NAPTIP boss threatened to arrest and prosecute those apprehended, warning that “recruitment of children below the age of twelve is prohibited”
She said “sometimes they give to the rural areas and pick small girls and boys for the purpose of exploitation.
We are also telling those involved in the act to desist from it because if NAPTIP gets you, you will go in for it”.
