President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the coup attempt in Guinea-Bissau, saying that it was an attempt to subvert the established constitutional order in the country.
Buhari also confirmed that he spoke with the embattled President Umaro Sissoco Embalo shortly after he survived the military attempt to overthrow his government.
The Nigerian president equally lauded the troops loyal to Embalo who successfully foiled the coup.
He said he was looking forward to a situation where the democratic structures will be strengthened to avoid future occurrences.
“I look forward to working with you to strengthen the existing bilateral ties between our sisterly nations, and the defence and promotion of democracy and its values throughout the sub-region, and the entire continent,” President Buhari told Embalo.
In the course of the conversation, President Embalo assured President Buhari that the situation had been brought under control and that “all is well, and normalcy fully restored.”
Recall that there have been reported coups in Mali and Burkina Faso, a development that is making the ECOWAS unsettled at the moment.
