Following the bye-election for the Akure South/North Federal Constituency in Ondo State scheduled for February 26, 2022, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will on Thursday elect its standard-bearer for the poll.

With 249 delegates within the two local government areas expected to vote at the primary, five aspirants have been screened and cleared by the party to contest for the ticket.

According to the Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the State, Kennedy Peretei, none among the aspirants had signalled intention to withdraw from the race.

While assuring that the exercise will be seamless and peaceful, Peretei expressed optimism that the PDP will coast home to victory in the election.

The PDP spokesperson, who emphasised Akure is regarded as the stronghold of PDP in the State, disclosed that the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party had approved a five-man Electoral Committee, under the Chairmanship of Dr. Amos Fawole to conduct the primary election.

“All arrangements have been put in place to ensure a hitch-free, transparent, credible, free and fair primaries.

“We urge all delegates to conduct themselves in an orderly manner, vote and leave the venue of the primaries.

“For the five aspirants in the contest, it must be understood that, this is a family affair. There shall be no victor nor vanquished in this race.

“Everybody shall be a winner, bearing in mind that the earlier occupier of the office was a PDP man. No sacrifice is too much to ensure that the PDP retains the seat at the Green Chamber.”

The seat of the Akure South/North Federal Constituency became vacant in the National Assembly following the death of the lawmaker representing the constituency, late Hon Adedayo Omolafe of the PDP in August, 2021.
