The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso has appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State to increase the subvention for the university.
The union made this disclosure on Thursday.
The union said the need to increase the subvention is necessary to allow the institution overcome its current challenges.
LAUTECH is one of the tertiary institutions owned by the Oyo State government.
DAILY POST gathered that the institution has been battling with issues such as non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances for academic staff.
ASUU has, however, appealed to Makinde, who is the ‘Visitor’ to the school to provide subvention.
The union said this will allow the institution to solve the challenges.
ASUU Chairman, Professor Biodun Olaniran, in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Thursday, appealed to Makinde to increase the monthly subvention which currently stands at N295million.
Olaniran said the improved ranking of the institution has doubled the work of lecturers.
He said to maintain and improve on this status, it is very expedient that a stable academic calendar is sustained in the university.
Olaniran explained further that the government should see to the challenges which lecturers are facing and which bother on welfare, particularly, the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances from 2013/2014 to 2020/2021 sessions.
He said at an emergency congress which was held on Wednesday, the current challenges, especially, the non-payment of EAA faced by academic staff members were reviewed.
Olaniran added that it was resolved that the situation be brought to the attention of the state government.
He said “At an emergency congress held on Wednesday (13/04 /2022), the current challenges, especially, non-payment of EAA (2013/2014 – 2020/2021) faced by academic staff members were reviewed.
“It was resolved that the situation be brought to the attention of the government and the public to avert another crisis in the university.
“Our Union, therefore, calls on the Oyo State Government, particularly the Visitor, to provide adequate subvention to the University.
“We also call on the handlers (University Administration and the Governing Council) to prioritise the welfare of workers who are the drivers of the system.”
