The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers State for the 2023 general election, Siminialayi Fubara, has been told to submit himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, slammed the former Rivers State Chief Accountant, for escaping an attempt by officials of the anti-graft agency to arrest him.

According to HURIWA, Fuhara’s action was disgusting and shameful, reminding him and other politicians that under the constitution, he was innocent until proven guilty and therefore should respect a properly constituted law enforcement agency.

As widely reported, drama unfolded at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Wednesday when the governorship candidate used his boys to stop men of the EFCC from arresting him on his arrival from Abuja where he had gone to receive his Certificate of Return.

The rights group in a statement signed by Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, its National Coordinator, charged the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike to ask his aides to surrender and defend themselves if they were not guilty of the allegations.

HURIWA wondered why the politician was evading the invitation of the EFCC if actually he had no skeleton in his cupboard.

The group encouraged the Rivers politician not to be afraid if he was not guilty since only the guilty are afraid.

HURIWA recalled that the EFCC had declared Fubara, the immediate past Accountant General of Rivers State, and three other top state government officials wanted over alleged N117 billion fraud.

HURIWA said the unbecoming tendencies of politicians to totally disregard invitations of lawfully constituted law enforcement agencies was unconstitutional.
