The Lagos State Government has disclosed its plan to plant thousands of trees as part of efforts to combat the challenge of climate change and increase green spaces.
The state Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, said this on Thursday during the 2022 Lagos State Tree Planting Day themed, ‘In harmony with nature,’ held in Oregun, Ikeja.
Hamzat, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Omobolaji Daba, noted that the government will incorporate climate-friendly initiatives.
He said, “With the Lagos State Climate Action Plan (2020-2025), our administration is serious about incorporating climate-friendly initiatives into everything we do as a government.
“As we forge a 21st century architecture of environmental health that harmonises with health and prosperity, tree planting will continue to play a starring role in increasing green spaces, and combat the challenge of climate change. To this end, we intend to plant 5,000 trees this month in the 57 local government and local council development areas.”
The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, who was represented by the Director Conservation and Ecology in the Office of Environmental Services, Mrs Tolulope Adeyo, said nurturing as many trees as possible will remain significant in the history of the state as it offers more opportunity to encourage residents to do so.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, Mrs Adetoun Popoola, stressed the need to protect the environment.
“The theme for this year is a reminder of the need to protect people’s relationship with nature, especially with the diverse species of living creatures like trees that sustain human lives with clean water, food, oxygen, fertile soil, climate regulation and more,” she stated.
