Motorists plying a Kano bridge, popularly known as Gadar Lado, have been plunged into tension after the Ministry of Works shut it down some months ago.
The bridge, built and named after late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, was found to have suffered cracks for the second time in eight years.
Constructed by Rocad Engineering Company for N2.99 billion in 2014, the bridge, a gift to Kano State by former President Goodluck Jonathan before his administration elapsed, showed cracks shortly after its commissioning.
Although that crack was quickly rehabilitated by the contracting firm, however, eight years after, the bridge has suffered another setback.
Speaking while supervising the crack, which was in the middle of the bridge, an engineer standing in for the Kano Controller of the Federal Ministry of Works, Engr. Abdussalam Dayyabu Kurfi, said they are going to ensure that they repair the bridge.
Engr. Jubril Saidu, the supervising engineer of the firm, explained that heavy-duty trailers are responsible for the problem, saying they had broken the barrier installed to stop them from plying the bridge.
However, months after promising to repair the bridge, the problem has not been solved, causing motorists to endure hours of traffic.
All efforts to speak to the State Controller Federal Ministry of Works, Engr. Baba Ali, on why the bridge has not been rehabilitated proved abortive as he did not pick up calls to his telephone neither did he respond to text messages sent to him.
