There are strong indications that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has thrown open, its governorship ticket ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Emeka Ihedioha, a former governor of the state, is been speculated to pick up the party’s ticket for a record third time after he was removed from office as governor by the Supreme Court in January 2020.
Ray Emeana, State Secretary of the party, was reported to have said at a meeting of party stakeholders, that nobody has the right to stop anyone from aspiring to any position.
“The 2023 elections is so important to us and our party; therefore, there is need to encourage everyone to join the Guber race.It is wrong to stop any qualified party member from contesting. This is because, when we have various Governorship aspirants, the chances of wining the 2023 elections will be brightened” he said at the meeting.
There has been an evolving debate in the PDP, on the need for the party to field another candidate for the party ahead of the 2023 polls after Ihedioha had been the party’s flagbearer twice.
Samuel Anyanwu, PDP National Secretary, has signaled his intention to join the race for the party’s governorship ticket. He had a failed bid in 2019.
Ihedioha and Anyanwu are expected to be the two major political gladiators that will jostle for the party’s governorship ticket in 2023.
