Former Liverpool boss, Rafa Benitez has revealed that Mikel Arteta actually tried to support Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before disciplining the Gabonese.

A video recently showed Aubameyang criticising Arteta, specifically saying the Spaniard cannot manage big and established players.

Arteta banished Aubameyang from Arsenal’s senior team after stripping the Gabon international of the captaincy following several disciplinary breaches.

But Benitez insists Arteta attempted to ‘support’ the striker before eventually deciding that the 33-year-old had no future at the club.

Speaking about the issues between Aubameyang and Arteta,, Benitez told Premier League Productions: “I will tell you something because I know a little bit from the inside.

“He was trying to support the player as much as he could and after he couldn’t and that’s it. And he has to make a decision.”
