Senator Orji Kalu (APC-Abia North) has commended the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for suspending its eight-month strike.

The Senate Chief Whip advised the Federal Government and ASUU to arrive at a common ground to avoid future industrial actions.

Kalu hailed the executive and legislative arms of government for continuous engagement with the universities union.

The lawmaker said being an advocate of quality and affordable education, he had been in regular engagement with the union.

“Both parties must establish a common ground to avoid any strike in the future”, his statement reads.

Kalu stressed that education is a panacea for development and must be a top priority in the policy thrust.

Noting that the government has financial challenges, he charged the authorities to do their best to improve the quality of education.

The senator advised students of tertiary institutions to remain peaceful, steadfast and committed to their academic pursuits.
